Oi, idiot fanbois. DON'T buy this gun-shaped iPhone case, mmkay?

Is that an iPhone in your pocket or are you trying to shoot me?

US police have warned punters not to buy a new iPhone case that resembles a handgun.

The Ocean County Prosecutor's office took to Facebook last week with a plea for punters to ignore the case.

“Please folks – this cell phone case is not a cool product or a good idea,” the post says. “A police officers [sic] job is hard enough, without having to make a split second decision in the dark of night when someone decides without thinking to pull this out while stopped for a motor vehicle violation.”

The case rose to infamy after a seller offered it on Amazon.com. It didn't take long for the product to score a great many critical reviews and to draw the attention of law enforcement officers, causing the seller to remove it from sale.

The New York Police Department's 112th Precinct also succinctly made the case for not buying the case in the Tweet below.

It's still easy to find the case – or one very much like it – on AliExpress, from $4.24 a pop, sans outrage but with evidence of a few hundred past purchases.

Mobile users can see the case here. ®
