Oh, my sainted super clusters! Free Mesosphere!

Data centre operating system releases community-minded Community Edition

A free edition of the commercial version of Mesos cluster manager – described by its creator as a data centre operating system – has been released on AWS.

Mesosphere DCOS Community Edition was announced on Tuesday (June 9).

Mesos creator Benjamin Hindman, chief architect and co-founder of the Mesosphere commercial entity pushing his mega-cluster platform, hailed the news as a huge milestone.

Mesosphere DCOS on AWS should deliver a way for devs to abstract instances of the famously hands-on cloud into a single pool of resources, the firm said.

The idea will also, no doubt, be to seed uptake of Mesos, a technology project Hindman started in 2009, and graduate to Apache forms of the kernel of his company’s Mesosphere’s product.

Mesosphere swallowed a $36m lump of VC funding in December this year and is now expanding its headcount on engineering and product development. Since sparking to life, Mesos has seen deployment on massive, web-scale properties in a relatively short time.

An Enterprise Edition of Mesosphere’s software, which requires a paid licence but comes with user authentication, security and support in return, is available in addition to the new, Community Edition.

In a statement, Hindman said: “With our release of the Community Edition of DCOS, any company or developer can easily tap into the many benefits that Mesos has brought to companies like Airbnb, Apple, Netflix, Twitter and Yelp.”

You can download Community Edition from the Mesosphere site. ®
