Citrix likes OpenStack, puts a cheap ring on it

Signs up as Corporate Sponsor and plans to join technical committees

Citrix has signed up to OpenStack, as a Corporate Sponsor.

Nand Mulchandani, the company's veep for product marketing in the Cloud Platforms Group, told The Reg that Citrix considers itself to have co-habited with OpenStack for years, thanks to NetScaler and Xen Server playing nice with the open source cloud stack. Signing up as a member formalises that relationship, he reckons, in a “if you like it you should have put a ring on it” maner of speaking.

If that's the case, this is not the closest marriage and the ring was not golden: Citrix has signed up as a Corporate Sponsor, a tier below the Platinum and Gold levels that give members more influence. More than 100 organisations are already Corporate Partners.

Mulchandani said Citrix isn't joining in order to do its own OpenStack distribution, and thinks that's a strength as the likes of VMware and RedHat do so but suggest – to the point of insisting – that their own preferred hypervisors get the gig.

Anyone who is an individual member of OpenStack can join the effort's various committees, but Mulchandani told us the company joining up will see Citrix people try to secure seats. Which will be welcome, given that the likes of Rackspace are rather keen on both Xen Server and OpenStack. Having Citrix in the room therefore means those who rely on it have a better chance of ensuring their preferred supplier gets with, and sticks with, the program. ®
