Juniper, VMWare see silver OpenDaylight through the cloud

Membership increases, but some big names are scaling back their commitment

Updated A couple of OpenDaylight's platinum members, VMWare and Juniper Networks, are scaling down their involvement with the Linux Foundation's SDN controller project.

However, it doesn't look as if the project is going away any time soon, since there are still more supporters now than there were in December 2014, and since its initial launch in 2013 with just 17 companies supporting it, OpenDaylight now has 46 members on the list.

After initially reporting that both VMWare and Juniper had exited the project completely, SDXCentral received a clarification saying that VMWare would merely drop back to being a Silver sponsor.

The only founding member to completely exit the group was Big Switch Networks, which in 2013 left after protesting that Cisco's controller code had been preferred over its own.

With its own OpenContrail controller software to care for, Juniper's decision isn't surprising.

The group can at least console itself that this year, it's attracted CA, the International Internet Exchange, Australian data centre business Megaport, and Spirent. ®

Update: Juniper Networks has separately contacted The Register to advise that it will also be retaining silver membership status. ®
