Microsoft hints at faster release cadence for Windows 10 previews

Builds are coming, really

After admitting that it hasn't been seeding new builds of Windows 10 as often as many testers had hoped, Microsoft is gearing up to increase its release cadence.

Redmond man Gabe Aul tweeted on Thursday that the software giant will have new builds of Windows 10 available soon, and even went as far as to suggest that risk-averse testers might want to switch to a more conservative release channel.

Microsoft launched a Fast "release ring" for Windows 10 in October, the idea being that more courageous testers would have access to builds with the latest features as soon as they're available, even if they were buggy or crash-prone.

That hasn't really panned out so far, though, and the entire month of February came and went without a single new build of the desktop version of Windows 10 being pushed to any release ring, Fast or Slow.

On Thursday, Aul said Microsoft has decided to increase the pace of the Fast ring, but it still wants to give testers a chance to opt out before it steps on the gas.

He further suggested that the software giant might launch a third release ring that could pump out builds even faster than the Fast ring.

"We are still considering another ring, but we feel we're not maximizing Fast yet so we're starting there," Aul wrote.

Aul didn't say when the next Windows 10 build would arrive – except that it wouldn't be on Thursday – but said that Microsoft would post an announcement soon in the Insider Hub app that ships with recent builds of the OS. ®
