Diamonds are forever, Fujitsu Eternus now for VDI

Want to connect 3,500 VMs? No problem

Fujitsu has added a bunch of new variants to its Eternus TR storage arrays, targeting large scale desktop virtualisation environments.

The models are the Eternus TR820, TR850 and TR880, with the last in the list claiming the ability to connect 3,500 VMs, which the company says is nearly double the scale of its previous models. Fujitsu says the virtual desktop density is boosted by front-ending the spinning rust with a high-capacity solid state drive, the usual trick for hastening .

It's not kit for the faint-hearted or tight-fisted: the starting price for the disks is close to US$120,000.

The units add high-speed compression to improve usage efficiency, offering up to 66 Terabytes per storage unit (33 TB without compression) and accordingly cutting deployment cost by 50 per cent.

Systems can be chained together to create units of up to 100 Terabytes.

All systems also support disk-level AES 256-bit encryption as an option.

The new Eternus units are currently shipping (and big in) Japan. Fujitsu kit usually makes it to Europe and North America a few months after launch. ®
