Google rams Landfill Android into Indian Ocean folks' faces

Pakistan temporarily escapes Android One launch

Three new emerging nations have been added to the list of places getting Google's budget phone version of Android.

Android One will now be available in Bangladesh, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, although the promised launch in Pakistan - planned before Christmas - has been put back.

The three new countries add an audience of 200m to the market for Android One, which is based on KitKat and promises regular updates.

It’s not clear if the phones will support the local languages, as Bengali, Nepali, Sinhala and Tamil are all baked into Lollipop, but not earlier versions of the Google OS.

The new countries will get the same Karbonn Sparkle V, Micromax Canvas A1 and Spice Dream UNO mi498 as the Indian market, but in Bangladesh they will be joined by the Symphony Roar A50 from locally based manufacturer Symphony.

Google said the new phones will “give people a high quality mobile experience for an affordable price, running stock-Android with updates from Google”. The phones typically sell for $100.

While the Karbonn Sparkle is available in the UK this isn't an official launch, as the UK isn't seen as an emerging market. ®
