Sonic BOOM: 10 blast-tastic soundbars

Fatten up your fat telly audio

Yamaha YSP-2500

RH Numbers

Yamaha effectively fathered the soundbar category with its audio reflecting YSP sound projectors. This latest model may look like a standard a 2.1 ‘bar and box, but behind the grille there’s an array of sixteen 2.8cm drivers able to deliver targeted sound beams under DSP control. The results can be extraordinary, provided your room wants to play ball (smaller spaces with hard reflective surfaces are best).

The supplied Intellibeam auto calibration mic automatically determines the optimum sound field, optimising the angle of the sound beams depending upon a room’s reflective surfaces.

If you want to customise the sound manually, the Home Theatre Controller app for iOS and Android enables adjustments tailored to the size of the room and the soundbar's position. Although a remote is provided, the app can take on these duties too.

An aluminium chassis and top panel ensure low resonance. The sub features two 10cm woofers driven by a 130W (dynamic) amplifier. Connections include three HDMI 2.0 inputs with 4K passthrough up to 60Hz. Different modes can be applied to different source content, including simulacrums for 7.1 and wide stereo. Yamaha’s YSP may be an expensive indulgence, but it’s often astonishingly effective. A must-audition for movie fans craving the best in virtual surround sound. ®
