IDC Storage Tracker in Hitachi Data Systems number-fumble

HDS's Q3 progress stronger than suggested

IDC's latest Storage Tracker used the wrong HDS numbers and mis-represented the company's progress.

We at the great El Reg wrote about the third-quarter tracker here and reported that Hitachi external storage revenues fell 9.4 per cent in the quarter, compared with a year ago.

However, we now learn from HDS that:

In the IDC Q3CY2014 Disk Storage Systems tracker released on 5 December, 2014, there were major discrepancies on HDS midrange and total revenue numbers. This was due to ... certain HDS midrange product revenues [being] wrongly excluded in the report.

As a result, the report didn’t reflect the real and healthy growth of HDS midrange and total disk storage revenues in Q3CY2014. IDC will make revisions to reflect correct HDS Q3CY2014 numbers in the next report.

This suggests that HDS's progress in the quarter was in reality stronger than IDC suggested.

We're working to get the real numbers soon and not in three months. ®
