Amazon comes over all eBay with new ‘make an offer’ facility

Connoisseurs of fine collectiblesold tat rejoice

Amazon is making a bid to steal customers from online marketplaces such as eBay with a new option to “make an offer” on items.

The firm is introducing the option on Amazon.com for folks to offer a lower price for products in the fine arts and collectibles sections initially, and will then be expanding the service to other items next year.

Unlike eBay’s bidding system, “make an offer” will be a private negotiation for a bargain and can’t result in the buyer paying more than the listed price-tag.

Sellers can indicate they’re open to negotiation by enabling the feature. When a potential buyer fancies a punt, they submit their offer. The seller can then accept, reject, or counter the offer via email until they strike a deal.

“The new ‘Make an Offer’ experience is a game-changer for Amazon customers looking for great prices on one-of-a-kind items, and for sellers looking to communicate and negotiate directly with customers in an online marketplace environment just like they do normally in their own physical store or gallery,” said Peter Faricy, veep for Amazon Marketplace.

“In a recent survey of our sellers, nearly half of the respondents told us that the ability to negotiate prices with customers would be important to drive more sales on Amazon," he added. ®
