TAPE LIVES... virtually: SpectraLogic and Veeam twin old and new tech

Fresh take on the 3-2-1 rule

Backup data source Veeam and backup data target SpectraLogic are getting into bed together, and offering combined old school tape/new school virtual server backup software.

The arrangement involves Veeam's Availability Suite and Spectra's T-Series tape libraries and its near-line storage nTier Verde disk arrays.

Veeam's Availability Suite v8 went GA in early November and combines the functionality of Veeam's Backup & Replication product with that of its ONE offering, which provides virtual infrastructure monitoring, reporting and capacity planning functions. VAS 8 is claimed to deliver RPOs of under 15 minutes for all protected applications and data.

Backed up data is stored on target devices such as EMC Data Domain, ExaGrid, HP StoreOnce and Quantum DXI arrays, and tape libraries.

Spectra has an existing partnership with CommVault whereby its Simpana SW acts as the data source and the targets are Spectra's disk and tape storage tiers, as here with Veeam.

Matt Starr, Spectra's CTO provided a nicely canned quote: "With this new partnership, SpectraLogic and Veeam are able to provide a seamless solution, combining the best in archival storage with the best in backup and recovery to protect data efficiently, securely and affordably.”

Veeam's canned quote person, Doug Hazelman, its product strategy veep, went all three-two-one, saying: "Veeam continues to recommend the 3-2-1 rule to eliminate any single point of failure," meaning you keep three copies of your data on two types of media, with a copy off-site for disaster recovery purposes.

Veeam and SpectraLogic 3-2-1 idea

“The new Veeam Availability SuiteTM v8 will enable SpectraLogic to further alleviate customer pain points by integrating our availability solution with its storage offering, delivering an easy-to-use and reliable solution for getting backups off-site," enthused Hazelman.

This is a good win for both parties. Veeam and its channel get a look-in at Spectra shops and add another backup and archive target string to their bow. Spectra's channel partners can go call on Veeam shops.

We might speculate about Veeam working on a similar deal with Quantum as that company has both backup disk arrays, the DXis, and tape libraries, especially with Quantum being an existing Veeam backup product target.

The combined SpectraLogic and Veeam offering is available now. ®
