Hactivist collective Anonymous has taken out the websites and Twitter accounts of white supremacist group the Ku Klux Klan following threats by a local chapter of the Klan against protestors in ‪Ferguson, Missouri.

Tensions in Ferguson are high in the run-up to a ruling on whether criminal charges will be brought against a white police officer, Darren Wilson, who shot and killed unarmed black teenager Michael Brown back in August, sparking an ongoing series of demos and protests.

‪Anonymous‬ has also released what it claims is the personal data of alleged KKK members in the St Louis area as part of ‪OpKKK‬, RT reports. The hacktivists took over Twitter profiles including @KuKluxKlanUSA and @YourKKKCentral as well as launching packet floods that took sites including kkk.com and ‪traditionalistamericanknights.com offline.‬

Over the ‪weekend the @KuKluxKlanUSA‬ account taunted the hacktivists with messages such as “Anonymous is nothing but a bunch of wannabes. They won’t take any action. We will not be brought down by some low-lives behind a screen” and “We are continuing to read Anonymous threats with much amusement. Still no action taken. #Cowards #HoodsON” before Anonymous hijacked the account on Sunday and posted a tweet featuring an image of a lynched Klansman.

The ‪@KuKluxKlanUSA‬ account remains under Anonymous control as of Tuesday lunchtime.

The cyber dust-up follows the Klan's distribution of flyers threatening "lethal" force against protestors in Ferguson, whom the white supremacist group characterised as terrorists, Raw Story reports.

Anonymous previously involved itself in Ferguson through a misfiring attempt to name and shame the cop who shot Brown. Hacktivists identified a man whom the police say has never worked as a beat officer prior to calling off the effort.
