PRAISE the $DEITY! Quantum preaches the joys of StorNext for religious video folk

Virty file management bods spot market gap, leap in

Who would have thought that house-of-worship video-makers would be a worthwhile market for the storage industry? It is for Quantum's low-end version of its virtualised file management StorNext product. Praise the Lord!*

Church video workgroups using Apple's Xsan filesystem now have the Promised Land of moving images in reach, courtesy of StorNext Pro Foundation, so to speak.

Quantum is busy widening the market reach of scale-out StorNext. After adding high-end 4K stuff a few months ago, it HAs now turned its attention to smaller workgroups of between five and seven people, coming out with the 48TB and 96TB StorNext Pro Foundation products just for them.

The basic details are these:

  • Dual StorNext Pro Foundation Controllers running StorNext 5
  • 48TB or 96TB configurations, which respectively support five and seven simultaneous Xsan/Windows/Linux SAN clients, including two Windows/Linux SAN clients as core system components
  • Either configuration can support up to four file systems (volumes) comprising 100 million files
  • The 48TB configuration is upgradable to 96TB
  • Optional StorNext AEL500 tape archive with automated file movement to tape
  • Optional Brocade 6505 Fibre Channel Switch
  • Optional Service Spares Kit

Mac OS X Yosemite updated Xsan to v4.0 and an Apple migration guide can be checked out here.

Quantum has included a year of support with 30-minute phone response in StorNext Pro Foundation. The object storage Lattus product is not included.

Potential customers are ad agencies and corporate and public sector video production departments, along with the aforesaid houses of worship – Quantum's term, the firm deliberately not saying churches** - that create significant amounts of video. Their media workers will be involved in pre- and post-production, broadcast and the management of videos.

Current StorNext users could add in small workgroups for graphics, rendering and digital effects.

Quantum, still transitioning to disk-based software and hardware revenues from its tape business, is reporting better StorNext business, claiming that revenue from its scale-out storage products and related services grew 50 per cent in the first half of the company's fiscal year (April 1-Sept. 30, 2014). This takes the annual run-rate for such products to $100m – not bad.

The product is immediately available through selected Quantum resellers. You'll have to ask them for prices. ®
