Hey, iPhone 6 fanbois: Apple's bonk to 'Pay' app IS GO

Scrump up the, er, sales volume

Apple will open up its new bonk-to-pay system to its newest phones, the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, today, allowing fanbois to bonk shiny-shinys to purchase stuff online or at 220,000 stores.

However, non-Americans need not cut up their cards just yet, because Apple Pay is only available Stateside and it is unclear when it will hit the shores of Blighty.

To use Apple Pay, all fanbois need do is register a card and then wave their iPhone 6 in front of a special near-field communication sensor and put their fingers over the mobe's fingerprint sensor. A similar trick can be pulled off online, although using an app rather than an NFC element together with the TouchID fingerprint scanner.

Apple looks be expecting a slow start to its new funny money system, predicting that the lion's share of transactions will be in-app purchases.

Some important brands have not yet signed up to the system, with US American megastore chain Walmart not offering Apple Pay because many of its stores do not have the necessary near field equipment.

“We’re trying to do something that I think is a game changer and it requires a lot of people to play together,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president and the man charged with overseeing internet software and services. “There’s a lot to do here and we have a lot of work to do, but it should be huge.”

Analyst Piper Jaffray has estimated that Apple Pay will generate $118m worth of revenue in 2015 and $310m in 2016, sums which look paltry when you consider the record-breaking $180bn of revenue Cupertino is expected to announce for the fiscal year of 2013/2014.

Walgreen, Wegmans and Duane Reade, among others, are set to offer bonk to pay services.

McDonald’s and Whole Foods are two more familiar companies that will accept the new funny money, although we suspect the firms don't share many customers.

Walt Disney and hipster clobber store Urban Outfitters will begin to take Apple Pay later this year. ®
