Man brings knife to a gun fight and WINS

Successfully escapes from police robot

There are two things generally thought to be true. First, you should never bring a knife to a gun fight. Second, the machines are on the rise and puny humanity is set to be exterminated in an orgy of mechanised slaughter not too far in the future.

Well it's a topsy turvy world, my friends, and these days it's pretty hard to know what to believe in. The two truisms stated above have certainly been badly undermined by the news that a man in the town of Everett, not far from Seattle, came off best in a recent violent encounter even though he was armed only with a knife and his opponent had a gun.

When a responding police robot attempted to apprehend the blade-brandishing blaggard, it turned out that he could not only run but also hide from the mechanised arm of the law. With the tin cop baffled, it was left to ordinary meatbag plods to cuff the absconding perp miles away in the neighbouring burg of Marysville.

According to the Everett fuzz:

At about 5:30 p.m., officers were dispatched to a residence in the 1000 block of Maple St. on the report of an assault with a weapon. Arriving officers contacted the victim homeowner who stated that a male came over to his house to collect on a debt. The victim and the male got into an altercation during which the male pulled out a knife and also took a handgun from the victim. The victim was able to get out of the house and called 911.

The victim believed the male was still inside his house and officers contained the area. Commands were given for the male to come out and a robot was used to look inside the home. While Everett officers worked to contact the male, Marysville Police Department found the male at a house in Marysville. He was detained and is expected to be booked into the Snohomish County jail.

The victim suffered minor wounds and was not taken to a hospital.

We're indebted to myeverettnews.com for the excellent police account. For those who don't know, Everett is no one-horse town - it is where Boeing makes the world's supply of 747 jumbo jets among other things.

Meanwhile, as regular readers of our coverage here on the Reg robot police desk will know, the truth is that the machines are by no means having it all their own way in their battle with humanity. This event was not a one-off - as the related stories at the side of this article will confirm.

As for the advisability of bringing knives to gun fights, we'll just have to see. ®
