Symantec offers BIGGER, FASTER NetBackup appliance

Move into EMC's market begins with refresh of 5000 Series

Symantec is refreshing its NetBackup 5000 series appliance line with a new model that operates faster and holds more data.

The firm's 5000 Series Purpose-Built Backup Appliance (PBBA) range has expandable storage and end-to-end (both client and target sides) deduplication for physical and virtual environments.

The existing 5230, a third generation appliance, features:

  • 2U appliance with optional storage shelves.
  • 4TB-148TB usable capacity. Usable capacity can be any combination of up to 144TB deduplication pool or 148TB Advanced Disk pool (non-deduplicated storage).
  • 39.9TB/hour throughput.
  • Snapshot replication.
  • Client and target dedupe; inline or post-process.
  • Fibre Channel access.
  • Gateway to send backups to supported cloud storage vendors — AT&T Synaptic, Amazon S3, and Rackspace.
  • Write to tape option.

There is a Backup Exec equivalent to the NetBackup appliance called the 3600 Appliance.

NetBackup 5330

We understand the new NetBackup 5330 is to be pre-announced today (Friday) in a blog by Symantec SVP and general manager Matt Cain, in which he'll say two "speeds and feeds" things:

  • Up to 229TB capacity.
  • Twice as fast as previous models, making it run at around 80TB/hour.

We also understand it uses v7.6.1 of the NetBackup software.

Symantec said it has sold more than 10,000 NetBackup appliances, and revenues from these boxes grew 35 per cent in its most recent quarter. The company also points out that this particular portion of the IT industry is growing at a health 6.8 per cent a year, according to Gartner, so imagine the smile on Symantec's face.

Nevertheless, Symantec admits it is the number two in the PBBA market, based on IDC figures*. Numero uno is EMC, with Data Domain and Avamar products and 66.5 per cent of the PBBA market revenue in the second 2014 quarter.

Symantec’s share was 11.8 per cent, a long, long way behind, although its share is growing at a faster rate than EMC.

Symantec contrasts target, deduplicating backup arrays (such as market leader Data Domain's products) with its own PBBAs that combine backup software, media server and storage array in one product. This approach will, it hopes, lead to more sales.

The NetBackup 5330 will be available in the EMEA region in Spring 2015, understood to be the second quarter. ®
