DNS cockup locks Virgin Media customers out of ntlworld.com email

Virgin Media customers who retained their old @ntlworld.com email addresses are currently blocked from accessing their accounts after the cable company appeared to have made an embarrassing DNS blunder.

Legacy NTL account names have apparently been spitting out DNS errors when messages were sent to those email addresses since late on Monday afternoon.

Delivery to the following recipient failed permanently: *****@ntlworld.com Technical details of permanent failure: DNS Error: Domain name not found.

The Register sought comment from Virgin Media. A spokesman told us:

Customers who use email addresses ending in @ntlworld.com are currently unable to send or receive emails. We are working to fix the problem and apologise for any inconvenience caused in the meantime.

He did not comment on what had gone wrong. El Reg understands that the problem should be resolved this afternoon.

Readers got in touch to flag up the DNS howler, while other subscribers took to Virgin Media's user forum to complain about being locked out from their @ntlworld.com email accounts.

Gripes are also piling up on Twitter, with customers demanding answers from Virgin Media.

However, the Liberty Global-owned company is yet to put out an official service status message about the cockup.

"I think they screwed up their NS records as part of this. You'd think an ISP could do better," argued Reg reader Allan. ®
