I am migrating email for 1000 users. How do I make it bullet proof?

Please help this commentard with his planning questions

New hybrid storage solutions

Readers' corner And so to Reg reader chivo243, who has penned the following question on El Reg Forums.

The topic of email system migration has come up during our weekly meetings. Since I missed the fun and glory of the last migration our institution embarked upon, I have a question regarding time and planning. Little background, about 1000 users in an educational environment. What is an expected amount of time to prepare for such a migration process? Does anyone have a bullet proof way of doing it?

A little light on detail, admittedly, but we are sure you can supply your fellow reader with some pointers. This way for your posts. ®
