Yahoo! Axes! Yet! More! Products!

Phoenix strategy still in flaming destruction mode

The Essential Guide to IT Transformation

Yahoo! chief Marissa Mayer is taking her scythe to more product lines as she funnels resources into mobile in an attempt to take the beleaguered web giant into more profitable climes.

The company will axe its Yahoo! Deals, Yahoo! SMS Alerts, Yahoo! Kids, and the Yahoo! Mail and Messenger feature phone apps, executive platform veep Jay Rossiter wrote in a blogpost.

"We want to bring you experiences that inspire and entertain you every day. That means taking a hard look at all of our products to make sure they are still central to your daily habits."

The products to be shut revolve around events, communications, and content, and follow Yahoo! announcing plans in March to also kill its BlackBerry app, message boards, the Yahoo! Updates API, Clues, App Search, and Sports IQ.

"We realize that change is hard, but by making tough decisions like these we can focus our energy on building beautiful products for you like the two we introduced this week - Yahoo! Mail for iPad and Android tablets and Yahoo! Weather for iPhone," Rossiter wrote.

These two culls themselves follow Marissa Mayer announcing plans in February to dramatically cut down the number of apps operated by Yahoo from 75 to between 12 and 15 zones.

Yahoo!'s most recent earnings report showed a net income of $390m, but $217m of this came from the company's equity in Yahoo! Japan and Chinese e-tailer Alibaba. Though the company is in the pink, its revenue fell 7 per cent year-on-year, and display ad revenue collapsed 11 per cent. ®
