Google's Page drops the A-bomb: Google Glass runs Android

Chief Googler confirms choice of techno-goggle OS

Google chief exec Larry Page has confirmed his company's techno-spectacles Google Glass will run some form of Android.

During an earnings call yesterday for Google's first-quarter 2013 financial numbers, Page revealed the choice of operating system when asked about the new product and how it would fit in the existing Google stable.

"Obviously, Glass runs on Android, so [Android] has been pretty transportable across devices, and I think that will continue," he said.

For the unaware, the glasses work by beaming video and other information into the wearer's field of vision - and also include a camera to snap away pictures and footage.

Tech pundits had speculated that Glass would run Android - Google's Linux-derived operating system for phones, tablets and other gadgets - but the advertising giant hadn't made any clear announcement up until now. The OS was not included in the recently published tech-specs tech specs.

Android is available for devices in all shapes and sizes, so Glass should have something in common with other Google-powered things, making it easier for developers and firms to tailor apps for the expensive goggles. Just don't forget that one shouldn't rush off to eBay to sell an early build of the hardware. ®
