Not content with worming their way into every aspect of daily life, a new Indian social network has decided to do the same for the afterlife.

Departedlife.com is the output of Anglo-Indian outfit Planet E-com Solutions, which says it is a Microsoft Certified Partner offering software development, search engine optimisation and other services, delivered from India.

The site says it is the “World's First Social Networking Site for the 'Departed Souls'."

There's nothing supernatural about the site: once you shuffle off this mortal coil there's no chance of logging in to a heavenly Linux box to chat with your mates. Instead, the site says its service will operate as follows:

“Departedlife.com is a social utility that can help you immortalize the loved ones who are no longer with you. It is a great way to revive unforgettable moments and precious memories.

At Departedlife.com, we aim to create a network of Remembrance pages where family and friends can pay due tribute.

Create a Remembrance page for a departed soul, upload photos and videos and invite your family and friends to pay tribute to a life well lived.”

The site requires login through Facebook and asks permission to do just about anything a Facebook app or page ever can to your profile. We weren't game for that step or the next, “immortalizing” a loved one with a profile featuring videos, pictures and text. We imagine that profile will appear in a Facbeook timeline so your friends can “Like” your dear departed ones. If those Likes are as sincere as most such approvals, they will doubtless represent a truly sincere appreciation of lives well lived.

The site and its Facebook arm carries no ads and no hint of how it plans to make money, which doesn't make it radically different from many other startups targeting the living. ®
