Now Apple cuts back on Samsung displays

Cupertino sticks it to patent rival

Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Backup/Recovery

Apple is scaling back its purchase of tablet LCD displays from Samsung's display wing, in what looks like another clear sign that Cupertino wants to reduce its dependence on the Korean giant in the wake of their recent acrimonious patent battles.

Stats from market-watcher DisplaySearch seen by the Korea Times revealed that orders for 9.7in fondleslab displays fell by more than 50 per cent in August from the previous month to 683,000.

Samsung Display – a spin-off business which only began operating separate to Samsung Electronics earlier this year – apparently shipped a record 2.8 million units to Apple in May, but has since seen the number drop in consecutive months to 2.5m and then 1.2m.

The hit to Samsung is good news for local rival LG Display, however, with its orders from Apple increasing from 886,000 in March to 2 million the month after and a whopping 3.83m in August, the report said.

The news follows reports earlier this month that Apple had reduced the number of Samsung-made components in the iPhone 5 as it looks to diversify its supply chain.

The report claimed Cupertino had replaced RAM and NAND made by Samsung with DRAM chips and NAND flash memory from SK Hynix, Toshiba and Elpida Memory.

Samsung and Apple’s patent battle across the globe has been well documented, with the latest development in the US the fruity tech titan demanding an extra $707m in damages on top of the $1bn already awarded to it by a Californian court in August. ®

Let's see if the transition away from Samsung chips and displays goes as smoothly as the one from Google Maps.

Well a friend of mine just had a camera die after 4 months and it was a Canon. He's also got a Samsung TV that he's had for 5 years and has had zero problems with it.

I had a Galaxy S which died after a 3 storey fall onto concrete, and bought an SII to replace it. Over a year of punishment (including being chewed on by a raccoon at one point LOL) and its running just fine.

On the other hand I went through 3 iphone 3GS in 7 months.

However, neither your or my anecdotal evidence proves sh*t in the grand scheme of things...
