Zuckerberg: Facebook phone "makes no sense"

Hardware rumours rumpled

Agentless Backup is Not a Myth

Whispers of a dedicated Facebook phone have been crushed by head honcho Mark Zuckerberg, who says it "wouldn't make much sense".

The Facebook handset rumours [1] have been circulating for years, with HTC the latest hardware producer touted for the phone's manufacturing process.

Such word of mouth should always be taken with a pinch of salt, though, and Zuckerberg's insistence shows why:

"There are a lot of things that you can build in other operating systems as well that aren't really taking - that aren't like building out a whole phone, which I think wouldn't really make much sense for us to do," he said at Facebook's latest earnings call [2] yesterday.

F off?

The Facebook blower was recently tagged to hit shelves in 2013 [3], according to "employees, recruited engineers and other people" who either know something Zuckerberg doesn't, talk a lot of hot air, or revealed information the topdog wants to remain secret for now.

While we can probably expect plenty more 'Facebook-integrated' handsets - ones like the HTC ChaCha [4] – the whisper of dedicated Facebook-branded hardware has been silenced. For now, at least. ®
