Mobile customers now consume double the amount of data than they did last year, says Three.

The operator's contract customers now use an average of 1.1GB a month, compared to the 450MB they gobbled up this time last year. The culprits of high data use are unsurprisingly top-end smartphone users, who swallow roughly 1.5GB a month.

Of course, Three is quick to highlight that this is significantly more than the 1GB allowances most of its competitors offer on their respective data plans.

Then again, Three's unlimited data plan [1] does give customers incentive to use their mobile internet more and be less conservative with their Wi-Fi management, so we'll take these figures with a pinch of salt when it comes to comparison.

As apps grow in size – if only to offer higher resolution graphics – and a greater number of mobile services become available, an increase in data use is probably inevitable. Just saying. ®
