Star Trek app warps into TiVo space

Remastered original series, cartoons too

Star Trek buffs who still haven't bought all the DVDs, HD DVDs and Blu-rays will be able to enjoy the original series on telly, courtesy of Virgin Media's CBS Action channel, which is not only showing the series again but has a tie-in app for Virgin's TiVo box.

Star Trek TiVo app

On show is the digitally remastered version of the series, the mid-2000s HD DVD-oriented update that replaced the old effects shots with CGI. Actually, it's a good piece of work that improves on the original without losing its style.

The accompanying app features cast interviews plus all 22 episodes of the Star Trek cartoon series and two "rare" documentaries: A Captain’s Log and Beyond the Frontier.

"Do they re-release old computer games and make all the graphics better?"

Erm....yes they do? OK, the Monkey Island re-releases might have had a switch, but a very large number of the HD upgrades don't. Silent Hill HD was an atrocious upgrade - who the hell deletes fog effects from Silent bloody Hill??

I was actually impressed by the care taken in the ST remaster to match the original feel, and the original effects really do look hideous on hi-def equipment. I can think of far worse attempts at "updating" media than that one. (I know all you Star Wars geeks are thinking Episode IV, but I was thinking Ghost in the Shell 2.0 - fuck that!)

Computer, search Star Trek Archive and compile all "I'm a Doctor not a X" jokes and play them in sequential order.

To be fair I got the remastered Monkey Island and the original graphics are totally crap.

However, I upvoted you because I have seen the updated Star Trek FX and they're totally crap. Completely lost the feel of the original.

When I was a child I cheered when the first special edition Star Wars came out, because when you are a child you think newer is always better. Now, as an adult I think Lucas should just have left it alone. Cleaning up the film reels is one thing, swapping all the cool models for shiny CG is unnecessary.
