Fans of 1990s gore-racer Carmageddon [1] had their engines heated up this week when developer Stainless Games called for public funding to help it reincarnate the franchise.

The team's KickStarter campaign went live today, asking for a minimum of $400,000 (£248,154) which will be used to develop Carmageddon: Reincarnation [2] without the strict oversight of "evil" publishers.

This means there will be no restrictions on running over old ladies or setting fire to cows, apparently.

Carmageddon: Reincarnation

Carmageddon Reincarnation encapsulates all that is wrong – and therefore right - with video games. We will stay true to Carmageddon’s roots while adding a ton more over-the-top, outrageous content,” pledged Stainless co-founder Neil ‘Nobby’ Barnden.

As usual, backers receive different rewards depending on how much they cough up. This ranges from credits and free copies, to an appearance as a pedestrian in the game itself.

At the time of writing, Stainless Games had already raised roughly a quarter of its goal. Just 28 days to go, lads.

For further information, check out the Carmageddon: Reincarnation Kickstarter [3] page. If all goes to plan, we should be causing mayhem on the roads again by February 2013. ®
