LG is to build the Gaikai cloud gaming platform into future LG smart TVs.
All LG Cinema 3D TVs [2] launched in 2012 will support Gaikai, a service the manufacturer claims runs on a "much more powerful hardware in the cloud than today's PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360" consoles. LG's TVs need no additional hardware and will run the service directly through their smart TV UI.
Gaikai's main rival, OnLive, this week announced a similar deal with Google. OnLive's cloud gaming service will be integrated into Google TV.
In 2010, Panasonic struck a deal with Ubisoft [3] to bring specially developed titles to its IPTV platform, VieraCast.
As more and more manufacturers adopt a similar approach, it's hard to ignore the possibility that the dawn of the traditional consoles' demise [4] is indeed upon us. ®
