New Zealand residents were treated to a spectacular event just before New Year, when a beachside encounter between orcas and sharks turned into a surf-churning blood-in-the-water battle worthy of a cheesy horror flick.

The bloody battle, captured on video by local residents, took place at Blue Cliffs Beach in Tuatapere in New Zealand.

The sharks – an unnamed species, but too small to be man- or, as the video shows, dog-eaters – come off second best in the clash, even beaching themselves to escape the larger and more aggressive orcas.

As one local, Peter Robinson (who owns the dog seen harassing a shark in the video) said, “the sharks were coming ashore because they didn’t want to be in the water.”

Looking at the video [1], El Reg would have to agree with the sharks’ decision. And yes, it’s a slow news day in Australia. ®
