Amazon preps major update for Kindle Fire UI

Software out over the air within two weeks

Secure remote control for conventional and virtual desktops

Amazon will roll out a major update for its Kindle Fire firmware before Christmas, the online retail giant has promised.

A company spokesman said the over-the-air update will improve the 7in tablet's performance, enhance navigation and provide owners with the option to adjust what appears in the UI's central 'recently accessed items' carousel, the New York Times reports.

Punters have complained about the Fire's lack of privacy: it's too easy to see what the previous user was up to, thanks to that carousel of items, which lists all the apps, books, videos, files and websites you've looked at.

Owners grumbling about the Fire in Amazon's forums point to that issue, plus the Fire's not-always-responsive touchscreen, and unimpressive webpage loading - the Fire's server-rendered browser is supposed to make page appearances lightning fast. ®
