Asda tempts technophobes with cheap PCs and broadband
Stack 'em high and they will come, maybe
Asda is trying to drag its price conscious Luddite punters into an internet world this Christmas by chopping the price of its notebooks and mobile broadband.
Amid flakey consumer spending, the supermarket chain has vowed to stack 'em high and sell 'em cheap in a bid to undercut rivals and etailers.
A spokesman told El Reg it plans to heavily discount tech this festive season and pointed to the first offer of a Toshiba Satellite C660-2IZ, which is £319, roughly £60 cheaper than Amazon.
"We are reaching a customer base that probably doesn't have internet access at home so are delivering technology and data tariffs at an affordable price – there will be a mobile connectivity angle to it," he said.
"Asda is part of Walmart – the biggest retailer in the world – and the combined buying power is significant," he boasted.
But with Best Buy set to pull out of the UK and other supermarket chains such as Tesco getting in on the act, there will be plenty of bargain basement offers this Christmas – all the tech that didn't flush through this year that vendors are keen to find a home for. ®
