Zuckerberg: 'Make partnerships, not war'

Names Google as most aggressive competitor

3 Big data security analytics techniques

Mark Zuckerberg has said there’s no need for Facebook to fight with other technology companies, but instead it should embrace them all.

Zuckerberg and his chief operating officer Sheryl Sandberg sat down with veteran US interviewer Charlie Rose to talk technology in an hour-long interview broadcast on Monday, and claimed there was no need for Facebook to fight with Google, Apple, Amazon, or any other competitor.

“I don’t think this is the kind of situation where there’s one company that wins all the stuff,” Zuckerberg said. “Google is certainly being competitive and trying to build their own little version of Facebook, but when I look at Amazon and Apple I see companies who are extremely aligned with us.”

Facebook doesn’t want to provide devices or the means to do things like play videos - that’s for their partners, he said in a preview of the interview. What is important is that Facebook runs across all devices and platforms.

“We are focused on doing one thing incredibly well," he said. "If you look at these other companies, then they are doing lots of different things, but we are doing just one thing" – a comment that could be construed as another dig at Google.

The interview is being broadcast on the same day that Zuckerberg popped up at his old alma mater: Harvard. He was there on a recruiting mission, but the media blitz makes El Reg wonder if we’re seeing the start of a publicity offensive in preparation for Facebook’s IPO. ®
