Liam Maxwell has been appointed as an advisor to the Efficiency and Reform Group and the government chief information officer on new ideas for the government's use of technology.

His work will cover developing new methods of service delivery, increasing the use of open standards and open source software, helping SMEs in the government marketplace and scanning the development of future technologies.

Maxwell is head of computing at Eton College, a councillor at Windsor and Maidenhead, and one of the Conservative party's advisers on government ICT. He co-authored the 2009 report for then shadow chancellor George Osborne on promoting the use of open source in government, and another that year for the Centre for Policy Studies on government's use of individuals' data.

A departmental spokesman said that Maxwell will begin the job in September and is taking a sabbatical from his position at Eton.
