Oracle cranks Sun Fire servers with Xeon E7s

Oracle has also kicked out a new disk array, the Sun Storage 2510 M2. The array comes with eight 8Gb/sec Fibre Channel pots and four 6Gb/sec SAS-2 ports for linking to servers. By supporting both protocols, Oracle says you can use the Storage 2500 M2 array as a direct-attached array at first and transition to SAN shared storage at some future date without having to change arrays.

The Storage 2510 M2 array supports 3.5-inch SAS-2 drives spinning at 15K RPM, and Oracle is using units with either 300GB or 600GB capacity. The base 2510 M2 unit has a dozen drive bays and comes with five drives; up to three expansion drawers can be attached to the unit for a total of 48 drives. That puts you at a maximum of 28.8TB of disk capacity in a fully loaded 2510 M2 array. RAID 1, 3, 5, 6, and 10 protection are supported on the controllers embedded in the arrays.

Oracle supports the new arrays with its Sun Cluster as well as Red Hat Cluster Suite, an alternative failover clustering tool for Linux. In terms of operating systems, Oracle's own Solaris 10 and Enterprise Linux 5.5, 5.6, and 6.0 are supported, as is Red Hat's Enterprise Linux 5.5, 5.6, and 6.0 and SUSE's Linux Enterprise Server 10 and 11. (SLES 10 and 11 only support the Fibre Channel controller.)
