iOS 5 files restoke iPad 3 retina display rumour
2048 x 1536 graphics discovered
Evidence has emerged that a future iPad will sport a massive 1536 x 2048 resolution, though hopes that the next one will may be premature.
Apple's new Twitter framework iOS 5 contains graphics files that extend to 2048 x 1536 pixels , reports website Techunwrapped.
Newsstand, a special folder that corrals newspaper and magazine apps, contains graphics files that are 1536 pixels wide and seemingly designed to tile to fill a 2048-high screen.
That is twice the size in each dimension of the current iPad's 1024 x 768 screen. And since a future iPad is likely to sport a display that's the same physical size as the current iPad panel, the much higher resolution means the new screen will be sufficient for Apple to call it a "retina display" as it does with the iPhone 4 screen.
Of course, Apple may simply have begun future-proofing its software - there are a great many iOS apps that lack 1536 x 2048-ready imagery. So it's too early to view the Techunwrapped find as a sign that the next iPad, whether it comes out in September or next year, will have such a high resolution display.
Will it have a retina display? We hope so, but we're not yet putting money on it. ®
