Sony lets slip NGP name change
Lovely Vita
Sony's next-gen handheld console, codenamed NGP, is to be launched as the PS Vita.
Rumours of the new name have been popping up all week in various places, but Sony itself has unexpectedly leaked the news now, spreading the name all over the back end source code of its E3 webpage, Kotaku reports.

NeoGaf user Gofreak noticed the spill and posted his findings, adding that the links don't go anywhere yet. The code has since been removed from the Sony E3 page, but the cat is already out the bag.

You've gotta feel sorry for others who use the Vita name, though, such as the radio manufacturer that recently featured in our Ten... DABs roundup. Search for Vita in Google and it's all going to be Sony soon.
An official announcement is expected at E3 next week. ®

Terrible
Awful name for a console that will die on its arse.
Amazing the way the gaming press still refuse to count iOS/Android as part of the handheld gaming industry.
We all have capable, portable time-wasters now, we dont need a portable Playstation 2.5 that sounds like a health drink.
Wake up in the morning wanting some breakfast. What am I gonna spread on my toast?
If they do the same thing that Nintendo did with the DS, I'm looking forward to the revised version being sold as the "VitaLite".
What took them so long?
Dual thumbsticks on a portable gamer, finally. Now actually possible to do FPS on the move. Probably too little, too late, though - if the original PSP had had that, it would have been much more popular, but now everyones gone mad for angry birds and that ilk, they think that's what portable gaming is all about. The phones have the casual gamers sewn up, and that's where the volume is, so this will probably die on its arse. Shame. Would have been nice to have proper mobile games.
PSP next generation
I still keep playing on my PSP occasionally, physical controls are much better than screen obscuring touchscreen buttons (for most games that is). Yes the hardware may be old and the resolution low, but there are plenty of very good games. It's the perfect size for portable gaming, screen big enough not to cause eyestrain (for me).
I do have a decent Android phone, but apart from simple bird flinging or puzzle games it's not as playable. Same thing for iphone, and even more so: the screen is higher density, but smaller. My thumbs cover more of the screen. The ipad might be a nice gaming device, especially for turn based tactical games I like so much, but it's not as good for other kind of games, lacking a physical analog controls.
From what I've seen of the new device, Sony has crammed whatever control it could fit into the same form factor. The display is very good for today (as PSP was in its day, and still good enough for me), there is an extra analog nub (hooray!), touchscreen for those games that benefit from it, gyros, and the backside is a touchpad. It may turn out I don't have enough fingers for it, we'll see.
The naming? Not as elegant as "PSP" maybe, but if it's easy to pronounce it'll hold. Take Wii, for instance. What sort of a name is that? But we are all used to it, and don't bat an eyelid when we see it.
