Sony has joined the Car Connectivity Consortium [1] - a band of phone and car companies dedicated to connecting phones to cars.
The CCC was formed in Marc [2]h and already numbers Nokia, Samsung, LG, Panasonic, Alpine, Daimler, GM, Honda, Hyundai, Toyota and VW among its members.
All of them are developing - or will promote - a system to present on a dashboard display apps running on a connected - by USB, Bluetooth or Wi-Fi - smartphone. Think of the car's screen as a thin client for the phone.
Touchscreen taps and signals from other controls - buttons on the steering wheel, say - are fed back to the handset. Calls can be routed to a handsfree too.
The first commercial products based on CCC tech are expected later this year. ®
