The Weinsteins go geeky

New gaming division for moviemakers

Hollywood heavyweights Harvey and Bob Weinstein have spun out a new gaming division which will work with technology partners to develop and publish video games for mobile, social, and console platforms.

The freshly launched TWC Games label will create games based on the properties of The Weinstein Company and Dimension Films. TWC Games has already formed a strategic alliance with video game production outfit Beefy Media.

The Weinsteins said in a statement: “The video game marketplace is changing at such a rapid rate. With all of the digital platforms, there are so many opportunities to broaden our audience with compelling, high quality, cost-efficient, video game entertainment.”

With film properties like Scream, Hellraiser, Halloween, Scary Movie and Inglorious Basterds in their catalogue, the gaming output could be impressive.

Harvey Weinstein recently admitted that one of his biggest business faux pax was that when he was taking a controlling interest in A Small World – an elitist version of Facebook – he “ignored the technology and went after the bottom line.”

After selling the networking site at a loss to a techhead, who then turned it around, he conceded that “the great thing that guys like Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg and the Google guys have in common is they treat their technology like it’s art, and I suppose in the hands of virtuosos like them, it is.”

We can only hope he remembers this in the gaming biz... ®
