Facebook expands in Asia

Opens office in Honkers

Internet Security Threat Report 2014

Facebook has opened a sales presence in Hong Kong, its second office in Asia in less than six months.

The Hong Kong office is being run by freshly appointed North Asia director Jayne Leung. Leung has a digital advertising background, joining the Facebook crew from California-based digital ad outfit The Rubicon Project after expanding their operations into Asia.

Facebook dominates Hong Kong social media usage with 3.7 million registered users signing up since it launched in 2006.

“By continuing to build our presence in the region, Facebook will be able to provide full support for advertisers here and help them create and execute campaigns that will have a meaningful impact,” said Blake Chandlee, Facebook’s VP and commercial director for Asia-Pacific, Latin America and emerging markets.

Facebook HK’s initial clients include 3 Hong Kong, Cathay Pacific and Groupon. The office opening follows on from the launch of a Singapore presence in September where it has three million users and will service Southeast Asia such as regional media buyers and agencies based here.

The social network has established offices in Tokyo and Malaysia which focus on developers and engineering.

Chandlee said that as the Asian languages are starting to get translated to various dialects, Facebook is seeing “enormous growth” in the region.

The social media giant hit Australian shores in May 2009, opening an office in Sydney headed up by Facebook's regional VP of Australia and New Zealand Paul Borrud. Australia boasts 10 million active users. ®
