Indonesian pop star jailed over sex videos

Hard time for homemade hardcore

Gartner critical capabilities for enterprise endpoint backup

Indonesian pop star Nazril "Ariel" Irham has been jailed for three-and-a-half years for participating in two homemade sex videos.

The 29-year-old was arrested last June after footage of him romping with TV presenter girlfriend Luna Maya and soap actress Cut Tari leaked onto the internet.

Irham was charged with distributing pornographic material on the internet, in breach of Indonesia's strict anti-pornography laws, and faced a maximum 12-year stretch.

His trial got off to a lively start last November when 500 fans assembled outside a Bandung court to support their idol. They insisted he'd done nothing wrong, but Islamic hardliners viewed the videos as evidence of the nation's moral decline.

In delivering sentence, presiding judge Singgih Budi Prakoso said Irham had done nothing to prevent the dissemination of the videos over the internet and showed no remorse.

The judge added: "As a public figure, the defendant should be aware that fans might imitate his behaviour."

As well as jail time, the court handed Irham a 250 million rupiah (£17,300) fine.

Although his accomplices Maya and Tari weren't charged when the scandal broke, the Jakarta Globe reports they may now face the same fate as their bedmate.

Police spokesman Inspector General Anton Bachrul Alam said: "What they did is related with Ariel. The investigators will definitely make a move since [Ariel] was found guilty today." ®
