Next smartphone tech? Predator style thermal cameras

Big aircraft or vehicle-mounted thermal cameras have been available for several decades, and somewhat portable versions nearly as long. At first these were cumbersome and inconvenient: they needed not only powerful batteries, but also pressurised bottles of cooling gas to chill their sensors down. In recent years, new tech has offered "room temperature" thermal imagers that don't need cooling, but these are still comparatively expensive, power-hungry and bulky - though they are now down to the semi-pocketable, paperback-book size in some cases.
Even advanced armies don't yet issue thermal imagers to every foot soldier, as they do nightsights. When a soldier does get given a thermal imager, there is generally no convenient way for him to transmit its picture to others or tie in location data with the objects observed.
DARPA considers that this is all wrong. Furthermore, the mainstream US forces, pushed along in part by previous DARPA projects involving military app stores and suchlike, are looking more and more to network-up and digitise their troops by simply issuing them with smartphones (as opposed to often cumbersome specialist arrays of kit such as Land Warrior or other custom made digi-soldier rigs). Thus the warboffins of DARPA consider that the simplest and most effective way of getting thermal imaging into every trooper's hands is simply to build it into smartphones - which naturally means that the kit will have to shrink, use less power, and become substantially cheaper.
According to a DARPA request for proposals (pdf) issued yesterday:
The mission... is to develop enabling methodologies toward very low cost manufacturing of IR cameras that are responsive in the 8-12 micron spectral band with drastically reduced form-factors. The vision is to include long wave IR cameras in cell phones or soldier portable handheld devices with network capability.
The Pentagon boffins consider that the same manufacturing methods which have made visible-light digital cameras small and cheap enough to be put into phones may also be applicable to thermal cameras.
The goals of low cost, size, weight, and power will be achieved by emulating a manufacturing model similar to that employed by the CMOS cell phone camera industry, where the key components (imaging sensor, optics and electronics) are fabricated using wafer scale manufacturing methodologies.

If successful, the IR cell phone camera-like approach will lead to widespread proliferation in military and consumer products. Similar to visible cameras, the IR cell phone camera products will lead to a continued quest for improved cost-efficiency in various manufacturing methodologies, making it more attractive in the commercial sectors.
The various tech-development efforts required by this - replacement of costly germanium bolometer lenses that must be machined by diamond-tipped tools with cheaper mass-produced miniaturised optics and so on - are expected to take no more than three years.
The usual caveats apply, of course: this is DARPA, whose specific mission is to take on only those projects where success is unlikely. On the other side of the coin, there's a lot of momentum, military interest and past success behind the ongoing improvements in night-vision kit of every sort, which has seen equipment on consumer sale today which not so very long ago would have been available only to elite military special-operations units. DARPA was behind a lot of the original developments in short-wavelength IR, too.
It would seem at least possible that in say five-plus years' time, the latest high-end smartphones will offer long-wavelength IR thermal cameras. Their owners will be able then to shoot Predator-movie style colour thermograms, to spot muggers lurking in dark alleyways, perhaps to track people by the heat of their footprints - or even to open keypad locks by analysing the warm fingerprints left behind by previous users. And a couple of years after that the same features will appear in the latest iPhone, and the world's media will be amazed. ®
