World+Dog says 'no thanks' to 3D TV

Europeans and North Americans, particularly

It doesn't matter where in the world you go, one thing is certain: we don't want 3D TV.

That's the only conclusion we can draw from 3D TV demand stats posted by North American nabob of numbers, Nielsen. In September, it conducted a survey of approximately 27,000 online consumers in 53 countries.

As you can see from the summary chart, only a small percentage of punters in each territory have a 3D TV or want one, whereas rather a lot of folk are sitting on the fence or really don't want 3D TV, thank you very much.

Europe and North America seem most resistant to the technology. Of the Yanks and Canadians, for example, two per cent of respondents have a 3D TV, three per cent plan to buy one, but 59 per cent have no intention to do so at all.

Over here, 45 per cent say no, but three per cent have one and six per cent intend to get a 3D TV.

The highest percentage of 3D TV owners is to be found in the oil-rich Middle East, though 29 per cent of respondents from that neck of the woods aren't interested in the technology.

Buyer in Asia-Pacific are a keener lot: 11 per cent said they will buy a 3D TV and a further 21 per cent said they probably will. Only 19 per cent said they don't plan to upgrade. Latin Americans said much the same: 17 per cent saying they will go 3D and 16 per cent saying they probably will.

Generally speaking, the younger members of the survey groups were keener on 3D TVs than older folk.

Separately, Nielsen sat some punters down, played them a variety of 3D content and asked them what they though works best. Unsurprisingly, perhaps, sports and documentaries topped the bill:

Excellent, can we please move on now?

I get it. The industry is running out of things to "innovate", we're hitting a TV platue. That's a good thing, in my opinion. Let's focus on improved LCD production techniques, or dare I say it? OLED sets.

Stop pushing 3D crap on everyone though. You've already lost me as a theater goer after the tron debacle ( movie was great, but forced to see it in 3D even though most of it wasn't ), I'm on the fence about a new TV ( whether to get one, or cancel cable ). Force 3d down my throat, I'm out.

I'm not alone in this.

Timescale?

Crucially you left out the timescale: 12 months.

Over that timescale I'd have been a no to buying a 3D tele. But the answer is the same if you're asking about a 2D plasma, a 2D oled or a 4:3 black and white CRT. I have a working tele (well 3 in a household of 2 people), its unlikely to break in the next 12 months, so no I won't be buying a tele of any description. Now, will my next tele be a 3D one? Almost certainly, but that purchase is just further in the future than they were asking about. I suspect similar reasoning holds for a lot of people.

I find

reality works better in 3D than the pseudo 3D images projected by a flat 2D screen.

Perhaps I am a Luddite, perhaps it is because I have yet to be impressed by 3D imagery and 3D content. Thinking about it, I don't find much 2D content that is impressive either.

World+Dog says 'no thanks' to 3D TV

+1

I'll get one when I replace my current 1080p HD TV if 3D is already on every half-decent TV anyway by that time at no extra cost. It wouldn't be a reason for me to buy a new set on its own. That whole fake movie 3D thing annoys the shit out of me. I deliberately AVOID 3D versions of films in the cinema.
