MSI confirms tablets to be outed at CES

Windows, Android models pipelined

No real details were mentioned, alas, but Taiwanese hardware maker MSI has confirmed that it too is hopping on the tablet bandwagon next year.

Hopping on the fence too: MSI will be offering two tablets, one based on Intel chippage and running Windows, the other built out of ARM and Android.

Branded WindPad, the two tablets will be shown off at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in January 2011, MSI said.

They will have Wi-Fi too, it added. ®

Hope they're priced sensibly

Android tablets seem to fall into two camps - crappy £100 tablets, or absurdly expensive £400+ tablets. There is huge potential for a device which sells for around £200-250 without going overboard on the functionality. It doesn't need 3G. It doesn't need a compass or GPS. It doesn't need a camera. Just a fairly snappy tablet for wifi based browsing, casual gaming etc. It's eminently possible to sell such a device and it's a wonder that Acer, Asus, MSI et al haven't stepped up to provide it.

WTF?

Blaming Apple for people using "pad" in a product name? Really?

Sure, why not?

They popularised this type of product and they associated it with the name "pad".

What's wrong with saying that they are likely responsible for the shift away from calling these things tablets? Seems pretty straight forward to me.

It was essentially a joke - they aren't responsible for the names everyone gives a tablet hereafter but have you never experienced the feeling that you wished the breakthrough device of a certain class was better named such that all the copycats didn't sound so ridiculous thereafter?

For example, I half expect an asian OEM tablet whose gimic is that it is impregnated with a bug resistant coating called... the Sanitary Pad.

But......

some people only feel comfortable with Windows, so how will it run?

Oh, the humanity!

Windpad

I thought any IT product name - espessially a fondle slab - matching *pad* would be in for a right good kicking from Apple's legal department...
