Reader Study Everyone's talking about server virtualisation, but are stories of real activity being greatly exaggerated? That was the case a year ago when we polled Reg readers on what they were up to in that area.
There was lots of toying with the idea through pilots and limited scale rollouts, but few yet going all the way with the hardcore high-end stuff.
We’ve seen quite a bit of maturing of solutions in the intervening period, though, with solid offerings now available from the three main players in the x86 arena – VMware, Microsoft and Citrix. It’s no longer a one-horse race, and a bit of competition has done wonders for progress.
Beyond the technology, skills are becoming more widespread, the management issues are now better understood, and budgets are freeing up in more organisations to allow investment in the tooling necessary for scale-up.
