Trend Micro has agreed to buy encryption specialist Mobile Armor. Financial terms of the deal, announced on Tuesday, were not disclosed.

St Louis, Missouri-based Mobile Armor markets data-protection software that offers full-disk, file/folder, and removable media encryption for endpoints (laptops, tablet PCs, and smartphones).

Trend said it planned to add the technology to its existing portfolio of data-loss prevention, email encryption and cloud encryption products. What this means, in practice, is that security suites from Trend that already include anti-malware and personal firewall features will soon include encryption functions too.

The net security firm reckons that complying with regulations such as the Data Protection Act, the credit card industry's PCI DSS standard and the US HITECH data security rules for healthcare providers make it a safe bet that organisations of all sizes will be spending more on encryption in future. Incidents that result in the leak of personal customer data are also pushing the move towards encryption. ®
