Geeks Guide2 Christmas 2010
Christmas Savings at Reg Books
GG2 Welcome to the first part of our trilogy of Christmas 2010 goodies. Over the next few weeks we'll have up to 40 per cent savings on a range of books from Smartphones to Lego, Cameras to The Godfather, and even Cheese. Cracking.
First up are the residents of 62 West Wallaby Street, Wallace & Gromit. Together with renowned car manual publisher Haynes they have put together the Wallace & Gromit Cracking Contraptions Manual, which contains 20 writeups of the best Heath Robinson style inventions created by one man and his dog.
Ranging from Techno Trousers to the Top Bun Bakery, there are detailed cutaways of every invention with explanations of how they work, how the inspiration for the device struck, and thoughts on how they could be improved. Packed with photographs and information, this is something for every inventor’s shelf.
Inventors who haven’t got access to Gromit’s workshop can always start with something smaller, but just as ingenious: Lego Technic. We’ve got three volumes of Lego Technic Idea Books from LEGO luminary Yoshihito Isogawa; Simple Machines, Wheeled Wonders & Fantastic Contraptions.
These books contain many hundreds of working examples of simple models, each with a different principle, concept or mechanism to help inspire great ideas. All the examples use different coloured pieces so that you can easily see how the models were assembled
Volume 1: Simple Machines covers the basics of gears, shafts, connectors, rotational power, motors, pulleys, chassis, rubber bands and doors. Volume 2: Wheeled Wonders covers everything you need to create for cars, steering, differential gears, suspensions, springs and transmissions. Finally Volume 3: Fantastic Contraptions covers amazing little devices such as walkers and the ways to move them, wind power, solar power, weights, magnets, lights, pneumatics, off-center axis rotation and changeover mechanisms.
From laying open the inner workings of mechanical creativity, we move onto something a little more covert. It’s time to put on the tin foil hat as we discuss the successor to Bletchley Park: GCHQ: The Uncensored Story of Britain's Most Secret Intelligence Agency. The book was reviewed in detail earlier this year.
Written by Richard Aldrich, this doorstop of a book took over 10 years to research and covers the low-profile GCHQ from the end of the WWII, through the Cold War, to the Gulf War and 9/11. There is great detail in some of the Cold War operations, including the leaks from spy Geoffrey Prime and tradecraft of Soviet agents. The book is well written and an engaging, interesting read.
GCHQ has only authorised BlackBerry devices to be used in Whitehall, and those who spend too much time with their BlackBerry will be in need of Crackberry: The Tales of BlackBerry Use and Abuse.
Written by former addicts Gary Mazo & Martin Trautschold, this book has a humourous, down-to-earth style and includes tales of unbelievable BlackBerry usage (at a funeral?!) combined with a 12-step programme to help addicts loosen their grip by teaching responsible use and BlackBerry etiquette. If this sounds like you, or someone you know, then this is the ideal purchase.
Finally we move on to Cameras guides, in particular the small Digital Field Guides that are available for most popular models. These are portable enough to be taken on any trip but packed with information to help you get the best out of your DSLR camera.
Composition Digital Field Guide is a book that everyone who wants to take better pictures should read. It guides you through the rules and techniques to help you compose better photos every time. From landscapes to children, weddings to travel, this book has it covered.
The Nikon D5000 & D90 both scored above 85 per cent on Reg Hardware and the respective Digital Field Guides will enable you to get the most out of these cameras. The contain info ranging from the fundamentals of what the buttons on your camera do, through to advanced tips and techniques specific to the camera. Both the Nikon D5000 Digital Field Guide and the Nikon D90 Digital Field Guide are perfect additions to your camera bag.
