Lord Sugar fired, Lord Young hired

David Cameron has appointed Lord Young his enterprise tsar, tasked with ensuring that small and medium-sized businesses get a fair share of government spending and are treated fairly by legislation.

Young, who replaces Lord Sugar, has been asked to write a "brutally honest" report on how government and smaller firms interact.

He will also look at:

Ways to encourage start-ups and remove barriers to opening a business.

Remove barriers to growth put in place by legislation and regulation.

Reform goverment procurement to make it fairer for smaller suppliers and better support for trade and investment.

Improve how government listens to SMEs and improve the advice it offers them.

Lord Young of Graffham, a former member of Thatcher's cabinet, will not be paid for the job. It will complement his existing role of reviewing health and safety rules.

Young said: "I’ll be focusing on what barriers government policy have been put in the way of small business development and helping to advise on what can be done to make life easier for businesses to start and grow.” ®
