A Geeks Guide 2GG2 This week we are offering 40% off Level Up! The Guide to Great Video Game Design by Scott Rogers, Creative Manager for THQ and the game designer behind hits such as Pac-Man World, Maximo, and SpongeBob SquarePants.

Level Up! The Guide to Great Video Game Design Whether you are new to games design or looking to put the final touches to your project, Level Up! is a light-hearted insight into the world of games development. Rogers provides a complete guide to video game design from ideas to characters, mechanics, level design, multiplayer and even music.

Rogers offers up an insider’s view into the industry and tries to help you understand some of the issues faced with all levels of production process, and how to create marketable games rather than those only enjoyed by the “elite”. Not to put a dampener on any of your creations, he discusses how some of the most “…stupid sounding ideas ended up being games that made lots and lots of money.”, for example, PaRappa the Rapper and The Sims.

Rogers’ book is probably more suited to those who want to produce a game that involves characters, as it goes into detail about combat, movement, character creation and bad guy creation. However, even if you are making a racing or puzzle game, there are topics which you can still learn from including camera views and icon display. While Level Up! could have given more in-depth advice on selling your idea to publishers, it does prepare you for some of the setbacks and gives you advice on pitching your idea.

All in all – Level Up! is a humorous and interesting book that we recommend, even if you’re not a gamer. Rogers’ wit and illustrations make this book a good read and easy for anybody to enjoy.
