Data protection officials in the Czech Republic have told Google to put the brakes on its StreetView cars, ahead of a full statement next week.

The Czech privacy watchdog began investigating Google [1] for slurping up citizens' unsecured Wi-Fi data back in May - the same time that German prosecutors confirmed they were investigating a complaint.

The Czech Office for Personal Data Protection told AP [2] that Google had not been given the necessary licence to collect the data.

The spokeswoman declined to elaborate further, but promised a full statement next week.

Google is under investigation in Germany, Spain, [3] Australia and several US states. [4]

So far the UK and New Zealand have cleared the data gathering, which Google claims was accidental. ®
