Thai mobe outfit warns of deadly roaming charges
Deactivate voicemail, or suffer the consequences
A round of applause today for Thai operator TrueMove and its refreshing honesty about the potentially deadly effects of mobile phone bills.
Proceed if you will to the company's website, and click on the button shown here to discover just what could happen if you attempt to access voicemail while wandering foreign shores.
Or rather, what could happen when you get back from wandering foreign shores and clock the bill...
Terrific stuff. The health warning was spotted by Tony Poulos while he was in France and trying to activate his voicemail.
He says it "really got me interested so I called TrueMove customer care to find out why using the voicemail service was a risk to my health".
He explains: "A very courteous and English-speaking CSR explained not once, but three times, that if I activate voicemail, whilst roaming, all third party incoming calls to my voicemail will be charged to my account at international roaming rates and that when I call to listen to my voicemail I will also be charged the roaming rates relevant to the country I am calling from."
Tony concludes that he's now "not in a rush" to activate his voicemail, thereby saving himself a serious blow to the wallet and an appointment with the defibrillator. ®
