Mountain View loosened its grip on Google Apps yesterday by serving up some new tools that should give sysadmins more control over their company’s cloud-based documents.

Google said it had recently added multi-domain support, data migration features, SSL “enforcement” resources, more mobile device security controls, as well as its new Apps marketplace.

The world’s largest ad broker said sysadmins can slice up their users into organisational units and control which apps are enabled or disabled for each group, which is of course the type of bread ‘n’ butter management system that Microsoft-trained bods have been able to tinker with for years.

Google said the features were added to help a given organisation or company test an app - such as its unwieldy Wave product - with a small user group before rolling it out to more people.

The user policy management features are also good for sysadmins who are gradually shifting folk over to Google Apps from on-premise Microsoft environments, noted the company.

Google wonks said they were pushing the feature out to Premier and Education edition customers at no extra charge. Which is big of them. ®
